They Might be Giants: Playlist for Kids

My wife and I went to see TMBG live when we were dating.  Now my kids are avid fans of their children’s stuff.  I use their ABC’s, 123’s, and Science stuff at work sometimes.  This playlist has more than 100 tracks.  Yeah there are a few duplicates.

With some exceptions, this playlist includes German music that: (1) was recorded in the 1980s or 1990s by German groups, (2) has German lyrics, and (3) doesn’t suck.

Cambodia and Me

In 1995, when I got my LDS mission call to Philadelphia’s Cambodian refugees, I knew nothing of Cambodia or its history.  I did a two month language learning stint at the Missionary Training Center (MTC) and then flew to Philadelphia. I very quickly became familiar with South Philadelphia’s narrow and littered streets, and I came to love the southeast Asian people who lived there.  In the almost 15 years that have lapsed since, I feel I have become more than somewhat Cambodian at heart.  One day I’d like to visit Cambodia.

Gum?

In German, the word for gum is translated literally as “Chewing Rubber.” When I was there, I messed up my German and asked my host-brother, “Do you want a Rubber?” When he cracked up laughing, I was completely embarrassed but I didn’t know what I had said wrong.
