I’m excited about this find. These free language courses were originally written for the United States Foreign Service Institute. You can buy them on Amazon but be ready to pay a lot more than you wanted to spend.

With some exceptions, this playlist includes German music that: (1) was recorded in the 1980s or 1990s by German groups, (2) has German lyrics, and (3) doesn’t suck.

Gum?

In German, the word for gum is translated literally as “Chewing Rubber.” When I was there, I messed up my German and asked my host-brother, “Do you want a Rubber?” When he cracked up laughing, I was completely embarrassed but I didn’t know what I had said wrong.

(That was about 15 years ago.)

Lifehacker and MakeUseOf suggest using your target language to do regular tasks on the internet.

I like to listen to German music on the internet. The Goethe Institute’s monthly Popcast introduces listeners to performers and plays and reviews their new music.

Radio Goethe, which is produced in California by Arnt Peltner, is weekly podcast of German music of various modern genres.

I also run a lot of searches on YouTube for German music groups like Die Prinzen and Münchener Freiheit.
